A Perfect Safari to Kenya and Tanzania
Full Itinerary
We write to share our travel experiences as we had such a good time that we highly recommend travel to East Africa.
We traveled when the political problems and "civil unrest" was the subject of extensive media coverage regarding Kenya. We researched our trip well, and with the help of Cox & Kings and their office on the ground in Kenya, we had no problems and did not encounter or hear of any problems at any time during our trip. We did, however, see first hand the resulting severe adverse impact on the tourist industry. Now that a political agreement has been reached hopefully the tourists are returning.
When we took the trip in February, we experienced a wonderful reception when arriving at Nairobi, and throughout our stay in Nairobi. The subsequent camps we stayed at were outstanding, first quality, and of a high professionalism as well as attention to detail. We would not hesitate to return.
We chose Kenya and Tanzania expecting excellent game viewing and were not disappointed. When choosing our camps, we also took into consideration terrains and landscapes so that there would be variety and different settings for game viewing. We traveled alone as that is our preference and it provides the opportunity to meet different people at the camps. With the help of the experts at Cox & Kings and their troops on the ground, we had the exact mix oflandscape and wildlife we had hoped for.
It is difficult to single out the most memorable experiences, as there were many. That being said here are a few:
— Watching a herd of about 20 elephants play in the river and the mud in Samburu was great fun and an extraordinary experience. To watch the herds in real life and their customs—such as when we drove up four or five Elephants (mother, aunts, sisters) surrounding a baby to protect and shield the baby from us. This was fascinating to watch and a lesson to learn on their behavior.
— We also saw a cheetah with cubs and it took the cheetah about two seconds to catch an unwary dik-dik (small type of antelope), which provided somewhat of a meal for the family.
— Seeing a leopard with his kill up the tree was another noteworthy experience.
— At Naibor Camp there was a pod of hippos (and two very large crocodiles) in the river the camp overlooked.
— In the southern Serengeti, we located a wildebeest herd (estimated at between 1.0 and 1.5 million). We drove into the middle and were surrounded by wildebeest for as far as the eye could see in all directions—a sight to behold for a long time to come.
We had excellent guides at each of the camps. All of them are extremely well trained and know how to spot game which would have gone unnoticed otherwise. Their knowledge about the game, their habits and much more was of great interest to us, and no question was left unanswered.
When it comes to planning your trip, we recommend taking the time to study about your destinations or proposed destinations, being very honest with yourselves on what you like to do and deciding what and where you want to spend your time. This was our approach to this trip and Cox & Kings paid close attention to our individual wishes and made recommendations. These combined efforts resulted in an outstanding trip and a true experience of a lifetime.
