Safari to Botswana

When Cicily's niece moved to Cape Town, we saw a unique opportunity to visit her and fulfill a longtime dream of taking a safari in Southern Africa. Luckily, we learned that some good friends of ours, John and Judy, had booked a safari through Cox & Kings and raved about the service. We immediately called Cox & Kings and found John and Judy's accolades were certainly justified. We found the Cox & Kings staff to be very knowledgeable and professional. We were very late in booking; we found out that trips like this are often set up a year in advance. We had very specific dates, which were only about two months away. Cox and Kings was able to accommodate us.

Since we knew nothing about safaris or where to go, we left everything in the hands of the Cox & Kings staff. Although we are seasoned international travelers, we had never traveled to Africa before. The itinerary that Cox & Kings set up was perfect for us. They took care of everything and when we compared the price to other trips we had heard about, the price seemed very reasonable. We traveled with a cousin of Cicily's, her husband and 21 year old daughter. We were later joined by a British couple and the seven of us traveled together for the entire safari.

Our trip started in Johannesburg where we were met by a Cox & Kings representative. He was great! He was especially terrific with the 21 year old who found it hard to deal with all the complications of the Johannesburg airport.

After two days of being escorted around the sights of Johannesburg by knowledgeable and very helpful guides, we were off to Botswana. We were met at the Maun airport by our guide, Victor. We can't say enough great things about Victor. He made the whole safari a memorable experience. Not only was he a great tracker, spotter, raconteur and an expert on every bit of fauna and flora, he had a great sense of humor and was fun to be with.

We spent ten days on the safari in 4 different camps. Each camp was special in its own way. The one unifying factor between all the camps was the friendliness and high level of service of the staff. Each camp was small and our party of seven comprised just about the entire guest list of the jungle camps. We were royally treated by the staff. We were also very impressed with the food in each of the camps.

Our first camp, Jacana, was breathtaking and was the most beautiful. Located on an island in the middle of the Okavango Delta, it was the most memorable of the camps. We have so many great memories of this camp: The incredibly beautiful landscape, our first sightings of most of the "big five", our guide Victor impressing us with his tracking skills, an evening ride on a Mokoro canoe, the local elephant, Jack, wandering through the camp, the sun rising over the water as we would head out to the game sightings.

Our next camp, Motswiri, was the most intimate with the friendliest service. Joyce, the cook, prepared terrific meals; we especially enjoyed the breakfasts served over the fire overlooking the river where we could watch zebras and elephants in the distance.

Our third camp, Linyanti, had the best game viewing. We were awed by herds of elephants, zebras, wild African dogs, lions, etc. We will not soon forget the hippos chomping in the river at night right by our dinner table as we were eating.

One of the memorable parts of the trip was the boat ride on the Chobe River. It was a spectacularly beautiful day and one of the highlights of the trip. The game was plentiful and we were able to get very close to them as our boat sailed close to the shore. The hippos were especially fascinating, and there were loads of them.

Our last camp, Toka Leya, was certainly very different from the first three. It was large, modern and much more luxurious. It was great to end the safari with such luxury. Again the service at the camp and the guides to Victoria Falls were topnotch.

There were so many memorable times on the trip. Just to name a few: The breathtaking beauty of the Jacana camp, the relationship with Victor our guide, the herds of game, our first giraffe, tracking lions after a kill, a leopard calling her cubs, the cruise on the Chobe River, the amazingly colorful abundance of birds like we had never seen before, the warm and friendly guides.

We liked the fact that we had the same guide for the entire safari. We think that the relationship that we developed with Victor was one of the major highlights of the trip and this would not have happened if we had different guides at each of the camps.

It is hard to think of what we would have done differently. We were so impressed with every aspect of the trip. We plan to use Cox & Kings for future trips. We are now contemplating Bhutan for next year.
