Galapagos Voyages
The Galapagos Islands lie in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles west of Ecuador. The archipelago consists of 19 islands, and more than 40 islets, which were created six million years ago when they emerged from the Pacific in a flurry of volcanic activity. British naturalist Charles Darwin was the first to make a scientific study of the islands in 1835, during his four-year voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle. His observation of life on the islands set the stage for his later theory of evolution by natural selection.
