PATAGONIA: UNTOUCHED WILDERNESS
Lurdes Munoz is your Caribbean & Latin America Director of Sales
I've returned from a Cox & Kings Discovery Group Journey trip to Patagonia - it was fabulous! The trip started in Buenos Aires, Argentina then we traveled to Bariloche, Puerto Varas - Chile, Punto Arenas, Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine, Calafate - Argentina, Ushuaia and back to Buenos Aires. Each place was different and beautiful at the same time. The majority of our group of 14 was traveling from the UK.
Bariloche is surrounded by several beautiful lakes, and snow-capped mountains. I did not experience any falling ash from the Volcano in Chile. It was great to walk around the town. At the top of the Bell Tower, where we had a panoramic view of Bariloche, I tried the most wonderful drink there, called "Choconac". Hot Chocolate with cognac and homemade whip cream. Mmmm Good! Bariloche is also known for their Swiss chocolates. Within a 2-block area in the town all I saw were chocolate shops. I got to sample quite a few of them and of course bought a box.
From Bariloche we started our lake crossing to get to Puerto Varas, Chile. For this crossing we had to take 3 Catamarans and 4 buses to cross the border of Chile. Through the journey we saw beautiful lakes, spectacular landscapes, and breathtaking water falls. We then flew from Puerto Varas to Punta Arenas and then drove onward to see the Magellanic Penguin colony at Otway Sound. The 2-foot tall penguins had just arrived and were fishing and nesting. It's fascinating to see them dig their nests and take turns incubating their young!
We continued our journey to Puerto Natales, a beautiful little town that rests in the fjords and channels of Última Esperanza. I had the most incredible meal called "Flor del Mar" (Sea Flower). Topped with salmon, cheese, butter, garlic, scallions, sausage, crab and tomatoes and wrapped in foil. They grill it and boy was it good! The next day we headed down to Torres del Paine, National Park. This was definitely the highlight of my trip. In the park I was able to view several types of animals like the Guanaco (a type of Llama), an Andean Condor, an ostrich-like Rhea, and the extremely rare Silver Fox. The park has several snow-caped mountains, glaciers and lakes with icebergs. After our walk our guide surprised us with getting ice from an iceberg and breaking it so that we can have a "Pisco Sour" - a lemon drink loved by the locals. What a special treat to top off spectacular hikes and horseback riding in the Torres del Paine forest.
Next we crossed the border of Argentina toward El Calafate, nestled on the southern shore of Lago Argentino. The next day we visited Perito Moreno glacier by boat. This amazing glacier is 3 miles wide and 19 miles long! Seeing this imposing glacier up close and a walking on the ice wearing cleats I could see and hear a truly astounding spectacle - blocks of ice rupturing and floating away as icebergs! With all this running around in cleats on the glacier you’re sure to work up a big appetite. And in El Calafate, you MUST try the lamb!
Continuing our journey to Ushuaia – considered by many as the "End of the Earth". We followed Darwin's 1833 journey onboard a boat and sailed along the Beagle Channel through the majestic "Glacier Alley". There was so much to see – the famous Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse and tons wildlife – from seals and sea birds even humpback whales!
I wrapped up my trip with a hike in Tierra del Fuego National Park, and a stop in Ushuaia for some King Crab. While the rest of the group went onto Iguazu Falls, I continued onto warm Buenos Aires and my flight home. Cox & Kings Discovery Group Journeys are great. I traveled as a single but it was nice to be with the group. I made great lifetime friends. I can’t wait to go on another Discovery Group Journey again!

BEST OF PRIMATES IN 2012
This coming new year, we celebrate access into the best areas to view two of the four existing gorilla sub-species, as well as chimpanzees and other primates. Permits are selling out quickly for the high season months of June to October in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where we view some of roughly 800 remaining Mountain gorillas. Two brand new luxury, eco-friendly camps in the Republic of Congo give new access to several habituated families of Western Lowland gorillas. No permits are required in Congo, but there are only 12 beds available in the luxury camp open for the experience, which also peaks from around June to October.
For more information on these locations, see our journeys and extensions: Gorillas in the Mist, Rwanda: Great Ape Safari and Primates & Birding: Congo, Sao Tome & Principe or contact Yvonne Whitcomb at yvonne.whitcomb@coxandkingsusa.com or 1-800-999-1758. |
