Big Cat Safari — New!
Featuring both the oldest and largest private game reserves in South Africa, this journey truly encompasses the most intimate view into the big cat predators of this diverse country. You will have a chance to see not only the big cats, but also the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, elephant) as well as a plethora of common plains game, such as giraffe and zebra, unique nocturnal species like the aardvark and aardwolf, and an habituated meerkat colony at Tswalu.
Itinerary
Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will be welcomed by your Cox & Kings local representative and transferred to your hotel. Westcliff – 1-night
Fly to Port Elizabeth on the southern coast. A further light aircraft flight will take you to the expansive, hilly Karoo in the Eastern Cape. Samara Private Game Reserve is a success story for conservation. The owners turned a number of farms into a 70,000-acre sanctuary and rehabilitated cheetah populations that hadn’t been seen in 125 years. Surrounded by a natural amphitheater of mountains, your lodge combines colonial-style comfort with modern amenities in tune with the great expanse of wilderness just outside its doors. Samara Karoo Lodge – 3-nights (B, D)
Embark upon early-morning and afternoon game drives and walks with your expert guides. On these excursions, seek out the resident cheetah, rhino and plains game with stops for picnics with amazing vistas. Spot giraffes peeking out over the thorny acacia and sleek cheetahs roaming the plains. Keep your eye out for the once-endangered white rhino and the seldom-seen aardvark. (B, L, D)
Return to Port Elizabeth by air, where you will have a flight via Johannesburg to the Greater Kruger National Park and world-famous Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Land at MalaMala Private Game Reserve, the longest established in South Africa. It shares a long, unfenced border with Kruger National Park, but benefits from having 33,000-acres of private land for the exclusive use of its guests. Opportunities to collect the “Big Five” are particularly good here with one of the best chances of seeing the elusive leopard.
Your luxurious camp features free-standing suites called “khayas” (“home” in Zulu) with two full en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and a canopy bed as well as living area and a wide, private verandah, plunge pool and outdoor shower. The grand public areas showcase the heritage of the reserve in antique photographs and artifacts spanning almost a century of rich history. Rattray’s on MalaMala – 3 nights (B, L, D)
Hop aboard 4x4 safari vehicles for morning and afternoon game drives, where your expert naturalist guides will help you search for South Africa’s Big Five: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. In between game drives, savor the amenities of your elegant safari lodge. (B, L, D)
Fly via Johannesburg to Tswalu Kalahari Private Game Reserve, which is the largest private game reserve in South Africa at nearly 250,000-acres. The epitome of privacy and exclusivity, Tswalu accepts no more than 30 guests at a time and boasts unique game, such as Kalahari black-maned lions, desert black rhino, gemsbok, springbok, eland, Red hartebeest and rare Roan and Sable antelope, tsessebe and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. You may also see rare nocturnal aardvark, aardwolf, and if you’re very lucky, the pangolin and wild dog.
Set at the foot of the Korannaberg Mountains, each of the modern-traditional stone and thatch suites comprises a spacious bedroom with an en suite bathroom, and a large dressing and study area. Your private sun deck overlooks a waterhole that attracts a wide variety of Kalahari game. Tswalu Motse – 3-nights (B, L, D)
On your blissful days in the reserve, enjoy activities ranging from safari game drives to walks, horseback riding, open-air sleep outs and massage. And don’t forget to leave some time to visit the colony of friendly, habituated meerkats. (B, L, D)
After a leisurely morning, fly to Johannesburg to connect with your onward flight. (B, L)
