Timeless Tanzania — NEW!
This journey begins in the water world of Lake Manyara. Travel to the Ngorongoro Crater to spot black-maned lions and black rhinos. On the Serengeti Plains, marvel at the timeless cycle of predator and prey in the wildebeest migration. En route, walk with a Maasai warrior and delve into the past at Olduvai Gorge.
Itinerary
Upon arrival this afternoon at the Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be welcomed by your Cox & Kings local representative and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Relax this evening and prepare for your safari through northern Tanzania. Serena Mountain Village or Arusha Coffee Lodge – 1-night (L, D)
After breakfast, fly to Lake Manyara, where you will be met by your private guide. Although Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of only 120-square miles, it boasts such a diversity of terrain that its mammal and bird populations are some of the most impressive in Tanzania. The park is bordered to the west by the dramatic western escarpment of the Rift Valley and to the east by the lake, which spreads out in a shimmering heat haze, backed by a narrow band of forest and sheer red and brown cliffs. Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge or Lake Manyara Tree Lodge – 2-nights (B, L, D)
Embark on game viewing and activities in and around Lake Manyara. Search for the area’s famed tree-climbing lions as well as the colorful colonies of flamingoes that inhabit the lake seasonally. (B, L, D)
After breakfast, depart by road for the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. The lodges on the crater rim, such as those we’ve chosen, are typically the most sought-after accommodations. If you’re looking for something a little more removed, ask us about the wonderful alternatives in the southern highlands. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge or Ngorongoro Crater Lodge – 2-nights (B, L, D)
The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater spans 100-square miles and contains one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. The “big five” (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant) can be found, along with most other species found in East Africa. Away from the crater itself lie several remote and superb spots for hiking and trekking, or simply relaxing and taking in the views. Crossing these huge landscapes on foot in the company of a Maasai moran (warrior) is an unforgettable experience. While you’re here, why not visit another of the amazing areas that comprise the Conservation area, including Empakaai Crater, Olduvai Gorge, or the dramatic gorges of the Gol Mountains? (B, L, D)
Continue by road or air on to the world famous Serengeti National Park and your safari lodge. The Serengeti is the iconic game park of legends and dreams. With no fences or manmade barriers, the park plays host to one of the last great wildlife migrations on Earth. Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge or Singita Grumeti Reserve – 3-nights (B, L, D)
Embark on half- or full-day game drives. Watch the majestic lion stalk its prey, the sleek cheetah fly across the plains and families of giraffe munching contentedly on acacia leaves. (B, L, D)
Option: Soar above the Serengeti on a spectacular sunrise hot-air balloon ride followed by a sumptuous champagne brunch.
Option: The migrating herds follow seasonal patterns, and we’ll recommend camps that are ideally located to view the migration for the time of year that you’re traveling. Want to get even closer? We can arrange special flight from Singita Grumeti Reserve to get you right in the middle of the migration.
After a final game drive this morning, depart on your flight to Arusha, and transfer to your day room at Serena Mountain Village or Arusha Coffee Lodge. Later, transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight. (B, L)
