Great Herds of Zimbabwe — NEW!
Travel to the heart of Africa on this adventurous journey to Zimbabwe. From the pristine riverine environments of Mana Pools N. P. and the Zambezi River — home to hippos, crocodiles and a great variety of birdlife — to the great herds of elephants in Hwange N. P., discover the wild areas of this little-visited land.
Itinerary
Upon arrival in Victoria Falls, fly to Mana Pools National Park, set along the Zambezi River. This remote area boasts spectacular natural beauty and a rich diversity of game. At its peak during the dry season, the park offers a range of activities, including walking safaris, game drives and most notably, incredible canoeing. Your deluxe safari camp lies on the banks of the Zambezi, shaded by a large grove of acacia and mahogany trees and with a superb view of the mountains of Africa’s Great Rift Valley across the river in Zambia. There is an open-air lounge, dining area and plunge pool. A recessed conversation deck is built around a fire pit out over the river. Ruckomechi Camp – 3-nights (D)
Mana Pools is renowned for large numbers of elephant, buffalo, hippo and eland — in the driest months, elephants stand on their hind legs to feed from acacia trees that bear fruit. Predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog are all found in the area. Birdlife is superb, and in the dry months, the photogenic Carmine bee-eaters nest in colonies on the riverbanks. You have a choice of activities, including wildlife viewing in open 4x4 vehicles, on motorized pontoon boats, on foot, in hides and in canoes. (B, L, D)
Option: Add the 3-nights Mana Canoe Trail adventure (begins every Mon and Thu, from May–November) to your stay. It comprises 4 days of canoeing, walking and camping in comfortable dome tents along the lower Zambezi River and within Mana Pools National park.
Enjoy a scenic flight over Lake Kariba on your way to Hwange today. Upon arrival, transfer through the park to Little Makalolo Camp, in the eastern sector of the park, overlooking a vibrant waterhole. Each spacious tented room has a quaint patio, comfortable beds and a writing desk. The open-air lounge, dining and plunge pool comprise the main area, along with a fire pit for pre- or post-dinner socializing. Little Makalolo Camp – 3-nights (B, L, D)
Hwange National Park is home to some of southern Africa’s last great elephant, buffalo and sable herds. One of the world’s largest elephant herds, said to number between 20,000 –75,000, ranges between Hwange and neighboring Chobe National Park in Botswana. There is also a white rhino reintroduction program ongoing at Makalolo. Along the Botswana border the easternmost tongues of the Kalahari sands creep into the country and mix with the teak forests of the interior, so that desert-adapted animals share the same habitat with woodland species. Embark on twice-daily game drives in search of the animals that make their homes in the park. (B, L, D)
After a last game drive, depart on a scenic flight to the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls. On arrival, transfer to your stately hotel at the edge of the gorge, within the Victoria Falls National Park. Savor afternoon tea from Stanley’s Terrace with a clear view of the Victoria Falls Bridge connecting Zambia and Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls Hotel – 2-nights (B)
Enjoy a day of relaxation. From your gracious hotel, take a leisurely walk to see nearby Victoria Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on Earth. Spend some time at the pool, play tennis, do some reading in the cozy library or even play golf on a nearby course. Visits to the Zambian side of the falls can also be arranged. Enjoy a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River on the eve of your departure from Zimbabwe. (B)
Option: Cross to the Zambia side of the falls to embark on a short boat ride through the channels of the Zambezi River to Livingstone Island, at the very edge of the Victoria Falls. Enjoy an elegant tented lunch before braving a swim in the natural “devil’s pool” at the very edge of the falls.
Today you will be transferred to the Victoria Falls Airport for your onward flight. (B)
