Situated in southeastern Lithuania at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers, the city of Vilnius has been inhabited for close to 1,000 years. There’s no better way to begin your exploration of the capital than by meeting your expert, local Cox & Kings guide who will lead you on a guided discovery of Vilnius’ Old Town a UNESCO World Heritage site, with impressive Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and classical buildings. See the historical and cultural highlights, including the cathedral, Gediminas Castle Museum, the University Campus and the Dawn Gate with its spectacular icon of the Virgin Mary.
Don’t miss the KGB Museum. The building served as the headquarters for the Gestapo during WWII and for the KGB during the Cold War. The sobering museum includes the former KGB prison and execution room in the basement.
Vilnius is quite a pleasant city to explore on your own. Some other highlights include the fascinating Jewish Museum and the bohemian Uzupis neighborhood, home to many of the capital’s artists. Vilnius also boasts a number of good restaurants serving traditional Lithuanian fare, which includes meat and vegetable skewers, hearty soup in bread bowls, and tasty cepilinai (potato dumplings filled with meat, cheese, or mushrooms).
Outside the city, take an afternoon to explore Trakai, the ancient capital of Lithuania, famed for its 15th-century castle and its scenic location. And stop at the striking Hill of Crosses memorial near Siauliai, the unofficial capital of northern Lithuania.
Wherever you travel in Lithuania, we’ll be right there with you, making sure your journey is authentic, innovative and utterly unforgettable.
