Itinerary
Arrive in the imperial capital of Delhi where you will be transferred to the hotel. The Imperial (Heritage Room) – 2 nights
This afternoon, explore Old Delhi and visit Shah Jahan’s Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the world, enjoy a photo stop at Red Fort and see Raj Ghat – the simple but moving memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. (B)
This morning, transfer to the railroad station and settle into your private cabin as you begin your journey through Classical India. Enjoy a leisurely brunch on board as you journey through the picturesque countryside. Upon arrival in Agra, explore the Agra Fort – an outstanding example of Mughal architecture. Savor an exclusive high-tea atop Taj Khema, overlooking the exquisite Taj Mahal, the symbol of undying love and flawless beauty, before you return to the train for dinner and overnight stay. Pay tribute to the world famous Taj Mahal at sunrise before you embark on your journey to the royal city of Gwalior. Relish a royal lunch at the Usha Kiran Palace, set amid 9 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns. Continue your brush with royalty on a tour of the magnificent Gwalior Fort, admiring its enclosed exquisite temples and palaces. Enjoy dinner at the opulent Jai Vilas Palace Museum, a section of which still remains the residence of the royal family of Gwalior. Return to the comfort of the train. (B, L, D)
Upon arrival in Orchha, step into the past at the enormous palace fort with its delicate domed temples. Return to the train and continue to the temple city of Khajuraho. On arrival, marvel at the intricately carved Hindu and Jain temples of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples boast highly sensual engravings depicting the whole range of human emotions and relationships. Return to the train for your onward journey. (B, L, D)
Early this morning, disembark in Umaria and drive to Bandhavgarh National Park, the former hunting grounds of the Maharajah of Rewa. Venture deep into the luxuriant jungle in search of the elusive tiger, on an exciting safari. Enjoy an interaction with a wildlife artist, lunch and visit the villages surrounding the park. In the holy city of Varanasi, tour the ancient ruins of Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon. After a sumptuous lunch, visit the world-famous Varanasi Silk Weaving Centre. This evening, cruise on the sacred Ganges and witness the religious rituals. Rejoin the train and head to your next destination. (B, L, D)
Late morning, arrive into Lucknow, the fabled City of Nawabs, and embark upon a city tour that highlights some of the monuments of the British Empire’s rule in India including the ornate Residency, which now houses a fascinating museum. Following lunch, relax on board the train. This evening, be transported to the glorious past as you celebrate your journey with music, exquisite dance and royal culinary delights from the Nawabi kitchens. Return to the train for your journey to Delhi. (B, L, D)
