Entry And Exit Formalities

Arrival Procedures:
After you have cleared Customs and Immigration procedures and collected your luggage, exit the Arrivals Hall. You are met there by your local Cox & King representative, who will be holding a Cox & Kings sign displaying your name. He or she will then accompany you to your hotel by private vehicle.

When you check in to your hotel room, please inspect your accommodations. If you are not happy with your room, immediately advise your Cox & Kings representative, who will be waiting in the lobby. He or she will help you secure more suitable accommodations in the same room category.

Transportation

Air Travel:
Please note that the name on your airline ticket must exactly match the name on your passport to avoid complication.

Flight times quoted are local and are subject to change. Check in for domestic flights should be at least one hour before departure, and we suggest three hours for international flights. Check with your Cox & Kings representative prior to check-in for any changes or delays. If you are traveling through London's Heathrow Airport, be aware that it is very large, and travel between terminals can take extra time.

Road Travel:
Roads are paved and in good condition, and there is an excellent system of motorways in the U.K.. Traffic in major cities can be really congested. In all of the U.K., traffic moves the opposite way than it does in North America and the steering wheel is on the right side of the car.

Electricity

The electrical voltage in the United Kingdom is 220-240V. A British BS-1363 socket is standard, with a plug consisting of three flat pins. A voltage converter and appropriate plug adaptors are required if you are carrying electrical items with North American 110 voltage.

Currency

The United Kingdom's unit of currency is the pound sterling (£). Like most others, it is based on a decimal system. One pound equals 100 pence. Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club and American Express are widely accepted. ATMs are available throughout the U.K.. We recommend that you carry cash in small denominations.
Currency Conversion

Tipping / Gratuities

Gratuities for driver, coach assistant and local guides are included in the cost. Tips at restaurants where the meals are included in your itinerary are included in the cost. Gratuity for your accompanying Tour Director is not included and can be paid as per the quality of service rendered.

Religion

With the U.K.'s cultural diversity, it is no wonder that there is also considerable diversity in religion. More than 170 distinct religions (including the official state-sanctioned Church of England) have been counted.

Recommended Clothing

A general rule of thumb is to choose easily packable clothing and layers for differences in temperature. Clothing should be light to medium weight during the summer, and rainwear is a must any time of the year. Dressing in layers is always preferable. If you travel in winter, we suggest that you bring a warm coat, scarf and gloves. Regardless of your destination, make sure that you bring comfortable walking shoes (preferably flat soled) for sightseeing. Please see our recommended packing checklist.

Shopping can be an amazing experience in the United Kingdom - especially in London. From the West End shops on Oxford Street to the fun flea markets like Portobello Road, Shepherd's Bush, Camden Market and Spitalfield, there is a shopping experience to suit every budget. In London, you can find many designer boutiques, souvenir shops and national chain stores. In Scotland, look for woolens and tartans. Book lovers may enjoy perusing the shops in search of collector's editions. Vintage items can be good finds in the U.K.

Non-U.K. residents can collect a refund of the V.A.T. (Value Added Tax) if you buy from shops that offer Tax Free Shopping. Make sure to ask for a V.A.T. 407 form when you make your purchase, but you will need to show your passport as proof that you do not live in the U.K.

Keep your receipts and V.A.T. forms together. Sign the form and have it endorsed by Customs when you leave the country. In some cases, you can get your refund at the airport upon departure, but some forms must be sent to a commercial refund company. Your refund will then be mailed to you.

Health And Safety

Cox & Kings takes every precaution to keep you safe and healthy while you travel, but keep in mind that standards are not the same as they are in the U.S. Travelers should plan accordingly.

Although the tap water is safe to drink, we recommend that you drink bottled water - readily available while traveling in this region. You should take the same precautions with food and water as you would at home.

Valuables
It is always good practice to be aware of your surroundings and to not leave your personal items (especially money) vulnerable. Be especially conscious of your belongings at major tourist sites. When possible, we recommend that you leave your valuables in your hotel's safe.

Travel with the absolute minimum. It is not advisable to carry valuable jewellery. Money should be taken in traveler's cheques, with the receipt numbers retained separately in case they are lost or stolen. Cash kept on your person should be minimum. Where possible, leave any valuables, documents and passports in your hotel safety deposit box. Be especially conscious of your belongings at major tourist sites. Your luggage is particularly vulnerable at airports, railway stations or where crowds gather.

Communication

Most hotels have in-room direct-dial facilities for both local and international calls. However, as with other destinations worldwide, hotels do charge very high rates. You can buy international calling cards from newsstands all over. Check with your local cell phone provider prior to departure to determine the availability and charges to make and receive cell phone service in the U.K.. Internet service is available throughout the United Kingdom.
