Your luggage is generally restricted to 44 pounds per person (including all hand luggage). Bags must be soft sided without rigid frames and generally can be no larger than 16" wide x 12" high x 24" long (please note that if combining with other with other countries, dimensions may be more restricted in those destinations).

Depending on your itinerary, Cox & Kings may be able to store your excess luggage while you are on safari at an additional cost.

Electricity

The electrical voltage in South Africa is 220 volts. A three-pin Type D or M plug is standard. A voltage converter and appropriate plug adapters are required if you are carrying electrical items with North American 110 voltage. Some safari camps and lodges may not have 220V and may operate on solar-powered 12V electricity. Remember to bring spare batteries that can be charged while you are out on safari activities. Some camps / lodges may turn off power from late in the evening until early the next morning.

Currency

South Africa’s unit of currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted, as is American Express, but to a lesser extent. ATMs are available in cities throughout South Africa. We recommend that you carry some US Dollars to exchange in addition to major credit cards. When traveling to Africa, carry only new issue (within the last 5 years) notes in good condition, as older notes and those wrinkled, torn or faded may not be accepted.
Convert Currency

Tipping / Gratuities

Gratuities for driver, coach assistant and local guides are included in the cost. Tips at restaurants where the meals are included in your itinerary are included in the cost. Gratuity for your accompanying Tour Director is not included and can be paid as per the quality of service rendered.

Recommended Clothing

South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, and the seasons are reversed. At most times of the year, the days are warm to hot, and the evenings are cool to warm. In winter or on safari, nights can be quite cold; a warm jacket is needed. A general rule of thumb is to choose easily packable clothing and layers for differences in temperature. Clothing should be light to medium weight during the summer, and rainwear is a must any time of the year. Most of the country is wetter during the summer, but in Cape Town it is wetter during winter. When packing for safari travel, avoid bringing brightly colored clothing or any with animal patterns. Also, avoid wearing perfume. Regardless of your destination, make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes (preferably flat soled) for sightseeing. Please see our recommended packing checklist.

Please note that laundry can be done at most hotels, camps and lodges.

Health And Safety

Cox & Kings takes every precaution to keep you safe and healthy while you travel, but keep in mind that standards are not the same as they are in the U.S. Travelers should plan accordingly.

Vaccinations
We recommend that you remain up to date with routine vaccinations. Please also check with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and your doctor for the most current information and advice about inoculation requirements specific to your trip. They typically recommend that you remain up to date with routine and other vaccinations.

South Africa requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever. In this case, you must carry an Internation Certificate of Vaccination provided when vaccinated. Also, anti-malaria medication may be recommended depending on destinations visited.

Note : A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for travel to South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe

The certificates, which are valid for 10 years, must be approved by the World Health Organization, and should be administered at a yellow fever approved vaccination centre at least 10 days before departure to South Africa, as the vaccine only offers protection 10 days after administration.

Anti-malaria medication may be recommended depending on destinations visited such as Botswana, Namibia and Zambia.

Medicine
If you or any of your traveling party are taking prescription medicine, please carry an adequate supply as it may not be easily obtainable while you are traveling. Always place your medication in your carry-on luggage to ensure you have access to it at all times.

Carry a kit containing sunscreens and other lotions for protection from the sun, insect repellents and sting relief creams, water sterilizing tablets and medicines for possible stomach upsets or indigestion.

If you or any of your party are taking prescription medicine, please carry an adequate supply as it may not be easily obtainable while you are traveling. Always place your medication in your carry-on luggage to ensure you have access to it at all times

Food and Water
Do not drink (or brush teeth) with tap water. We recommend that you drink bottled water, which is readily available. You should take the same precautions with food and water as you would at home.

Valuables
It is always good practice to be aware of your surroundings and to not leave your personal items (especially money) vulnerable. Be especially conscious of your belongings at major tourist sites. When possible, we recommend that you leave your valuables in your hotel's safe.

Travel with the absolute minimum. It is not advisable to carry valuable jewellery. Money should be taken in traveler's cheques, with the receipt numbers retained separately in case they are lost or stolen. Cash kept on your person should be minimum. Where possible, leave any valuables, documents and passports in your hotel safety deposit box. Be especially conscious of your belongings at major tourist sites. Your luggage is particularly vulnerable at airports, railway stations or where crowds gather.

You can buy international calling cards from newsstands all over.
