Trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro

10 days & 9 nights, Private Journey

Arusha & Mt. Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route

Journey to the Rooftop of Africa as you climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the continent and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Embark on this private expedition along the less-traveled Machame Route, accompanied by world-class guides and porters. While not a "technical climb," it is physically demanding - and the experience of standing atop the summit and looking out onto the African plains that stretch into the distance below will truly take your breath away.

  • Day 1
    Arrive Kilimanjaro - To Arusha

Upon arrival, you will be escorted to your hotel.

Rivertrees Country Inn - 2 Nights
  • Day 2
    Arusha

Today, meet your guide for a briefing and take an afternoon hike to help acclimate after your journey. This evening, enjoy dinner at your hotel.

    Rivertrees Country Inn (B, L, D)
  • Day 3
    To Mt. Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, depart by road to Kilimanjaro. At the Machame Gate, your crew finalizes packing and you commence your journey.

    Machame Camp (10,000 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 4
    Mt. Kilimanjaro

Leave Machame Camp for Shira Camp. After a relatively steep first section, the trail levels out as you pass through the glacial valleys of the Heath Zone, home to attractive Helichrysum and Lobelia plants. Keep an eye out for lava tubes. Your guide will pick a good spot for a picnic lunch before you continue to Shira Camp for the night.

    Shira Camp (12,500 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 5
    Mt. Kilimanjaro

Today is a "walk high, sleep low" day to help you acclimatize to the altitude. After breakfast, ascend into alpine desert and, if you're feeling strong, you can even head up to the Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp.

    Barranco Camp (13,000 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 6
    Mt. Kilimanjaro

From Barranco Camp, which is famous for its giant groundsels, ascend the Barranco Wall and hike through incredible glacial valleys to Karanga Camp. Seen from here, the glaciers are at their most spectacular - vast sheets of cold, crystalline ice glow crimson during the evening light.
In the afternoon, you can take a walk with your guides to marvel at some great views of the southern walls of Kibo as well as some deep glacial valleys.

    Karanga Camp (13,100 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 7
    Mt. Kilimanjaro

Today is another half day as you ascend to Barafu Camp.
In this desolate alpine desert, strong winds at times rip over the camp - yet in the evening, splendid views of Mawenzi Peak can often be enjoyed. Eat an early dinner and get some rest before you depart for the summit at just around midnight.

    Barafu Camp (15,200 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 8
    Mt. Kilimanjaro

Patience and persistence are the name of the game as you attempt to reach the summit. Climb through the middle of the night and by dawn, as the first rays of light start to appear, most climbers arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Rooftop of Africa! After savoring your accomplishment (and the views), begin your descent to Mweka Camp.

    Mweka Camp (10,000 feet) - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 9
    To Arusha

After breakfast in camp, descend through the scenic Afromontane forest. Around midday, after saying farewell to your crew, you are picked up and escorted to your hotel for a well deserved shower! This evening, toast to your accomplishments at a celebratory dinner.

    The Hatari Lodge - 1 Night (B, L, D)
  • Day 10
    Depart Kilimanjaro

Sleep in and relax until it is time to connect with your onward flight.
